Despite the unprecedented disruption caused by COVID-19, it is reported that the cargo volume through seaports in Vietnam is up four percent in 2020 to 680 million ton. In comparison, global maritime trade is estimated to plunge by 4.1% in the same period, according to UNCTAD. Thanks to Vietnamese government’s remarkable containment of COVID-19!

2021 marks the first year of the five-year socio-economic development plan for the 2021 – 2025 period. 2021 will witness the country’s recovery from the pandemic and the World Bank forecasts that the GDP growth of Vietnam will be 6.8 percent this year. In terms of seaports, highlighting the country’s success in developing ports over the past 20 years, Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Nhat presided over a workshop on master planning for the development of Vietnam's seaport system in the period of 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050 on December 30, 2020, and the Ministry of Transport said that it plans to invest between approximately $6 and $8 billion by 2030 in the next phase of port development and to increase annual cargo capacity to 1.14-1.42 billion tons.

Based on the success of the first Vietnam Port Development Conference (VPDC) in 2019, VPDC 2021 is an opportune event to address the most imperative concerns and discuss the way forward for Vietnam seaports to improve capacity, productivity, service quality and performance to catch up with the market demands for import and export goods and goals for economic development. VPDC 2021 will strengthen connections among governments, port authorities, port operators, shipping lines, equipment manufacturers, smart solution providers, investors, consultants and business associations to brainstorm joint efforts to develop Vietnam seaports  efficiently, sustainably and smart.
