Dr. Kathryn King-Shier is a Professor and AIHS Health Scholar jointly appointed to the Faculty of Nursing and Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary. She earned a BScNursing from McMaster University in 1980 and a Masters and PhD in Nursing from the University of Alberta in 1993 and 1997 respectively. She undertook post-doctoral training in the Faculty of Medicine, Division of Cardiology (EPICORE Centre) between 1997 and 1999 and was appointed to the University of Calgary in 1999. Since coming to the University of Calgary, she has held competitive research funding from bodies such as the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (now AIHS), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Heart and Stroke Foundation, and Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Dr. King-Shier is well known for her multi-methods program of research which focuses on cardiac recovery and determinants of heart health decisions; particularly focused on ethnicity and gender. As one of Canada’s leading cardiovascular nurse scientists, she served on the Institute Advisory Board for the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR) from 2003-2008. She is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing and the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing and a past editorial board member of the Canadian Journal of Cardiology. Dr. King-Shier regularly undertakes peer review for local and national funding agencies as well as multi-disciplinary journals. Dr. King-Shier supervises MN, PhD and Post-doctoral trainees.
